6/4/2023 0 Comments The blind assassin review![]() It is very rare that I am beholden to a singular book the way I am with Margaret Atwood’s The Blind Assassin. By turns lyrical, outrageous, formidable, compelling and funny, this is a novel filled with deep humour and dark drama. ![]() As the invented story twists through love and sacrifice and betrayal, so does the real one while events in both move closer to war and catastrophe. During their secret meetings in rented rooms, the lovers concoct a pulp fantasy set on Planet Zycron. Sexually explicit for its time, The Blind Assassin describes a risky affair in the turbulent thirties between a wealthy young woman and a man on the run. Chief among these was the publication of The Blind Assassin, a novel which earned the dead Laura Chase not only notoriety but also a devoted cult following: as Iris says, she herself lives ‘in the long shadow cast by Laura.’ While coping with her unreliable body, Iris reflects on her far from exemplary life, in particular the events surrounding her sister’s tragic death. Laura Chase’s older sister Iris, married at eighteen to a politically prominent industrialist but now poor and eighty-two, is living in Fort Ticonderoga, a town dominated by their once-prosperous family before the First World War. ![]() ![]() ![]() ‘Ten days after the war ended, my sister Laura drove a car off a bridge.’ Thus begins The Blind Assassin, Margaret Atwood’s stunning new novel. ![]()

India: A History, the revised edition, was published on 22nd July, 2010. The author narrates stories regarding various historical events and people who have made a mark or contributed to the transformation of India in all these years, making the country what it is in the present day. India as a subcontinent is described as every historian's dream because of its rich and diverse culture. The 1947 partition of India is spoken about by the author from today's point of view. ![]() Along with that, the status of the princely states under the British rule is also discussed. India: A History also includes the countries of Bangladesh and Pakistan, which were parts of ancient India. Mainly because of the lack of unity based on religion, caste, creed and color. He describes how in spite of a common culture running through the blood of most people in India, this country has never been a single unitary state. This country possesses so much continuity and diversity, that it's called a subcontinent. In this book, the author speaks about the distinct features of India. Right from the first Harappan Civilization in the ancient times to the present day activities, this book is an attempt to paint a big picture of India to its readers. India: A History, available in paperback, is a book which describes the country of India, in all its richness and glory, from times immemorial. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The novel first published in the 1970s was very apt for the times. Humor and tragedy side by side as in life. Irving has such a gift for capturing the irreverent, awkward, and eccentric in every day moments through characters not afraid to ask lifes tough questions. In more than thirty languages, in more than forty countries-with more than ten million copies in print- Garp is the precursor of John Irving's later protest novels. Winner of the National Book Award, Garp is a comedy with forebodings of doom. The subject of sexual hatred-of intolerance of sexual minorities and differences-runs the gamut of "lunacy and sorrow." Jenny is an unmarried nurse she becomes a single mom and a feminist leader, beloved but polarizing. Of course for many people this will just not be the right sort of book, but i think there are also many people who will love it. You may read the first few lines of this book and think: "Oh, boring", but believe me, it gets better. The Silmarillion starts with the making of Middle Earth and goes on to describe the coming of the peoples of the world (elves, men, dwarves and halflings in that order!) There are some long words and seemingly impossible to pronounce names that I got stuck on, so if you have trouble reading some of them don't worry. Tolkien wrote it after his first Middle Earth book, The Hobbit, and it mainly records the story of the Silmarils (gems of power). A new hardback edition with a cover design by Tolkien himself, to complement the popular Hobbit and Lord of the Rings hardbacks. ‘The Silmarillion’ chronicles the creation of what Eru Iluvatar, the supreme being, intended to be a perfect world and the introduction of evil through the arrogance of Melkor, the first and most gifted among. It is basically a very long history of Middle Earth: from when it was made, to epic battles and characters who you meet in the other Tolkien novels. Tolkien’s works, revised and published by his son Christopher, with help from Guy Gavriel Kay. The Silmarillion is a Tolkien book but is not an adventure like Lord Of The Rings or The Hobbit. ![]() ![]() "Pevear and Volokhonsky are at once scrupulous translators and vivid stylists of English, and their superb rendering allows us, as perhaps never before, to grasp the palpability of Tolstoy's "characters, acts, situations"". ![]() (Lisa Appignanesi, Independent, Books of the Year). This acclaimed modern translation by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky won the PEN/ Book of the Month Club Translation Prize in 2001. Contrasting with this tale of love and self-destruction is the vividly observed story of Levin, a man striving to find contentment and a meaning to his life - and also a self-portrait of Tolstoy himself.
